In sub-Saharan Africa, 35 million primary age children are out of school. The NAFI brand is committed has a social development project in a small rural community in the Gambia in which we are ensuring that all the girls attend school and the women have a sustainable income. We are also ensuring that the community has the following:

  • Clean drinking water - To this end though your donations and a part of the profit from our sales, we have so far built two boreholes. This will provide nine (Water taps) throughout the village.
  • A educational and empowerment centre. This will serve the children ages 3-8 who would otherwise not attend school. We will also use it to provide skills training for the women in the community. At this school we will provide the children with breakfast plus lunch.
  • Through donation we have started the ground work for the construction of this school. We are in the process of making the blocks. We will next start the excavation for the foundation as when we are in a financial position to do so.
  • A library - this is to encourage reading and will be opened to the surrounding villages for use.
  • A first aid station/health clinic - As this is a community with a lot of children basic first aid will be offered here. We plan to hire in visiting health care workers once per month or organise volunteer missions.

How You Can Help?
Educating and empowering the girls and women in the community of Tallen. Support us with building new school and develop a sustainable source of income (farming).

The project activities for the development of a new school include:

  1. Working with local partners to secure land and work with contractors to build the school. (Done)
  2. Initial enrolment of 30–35 children from Play Group to Grade 2.
  3. Hiring a team skilled and trained staff members.

The project supports the following UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):

  1. SDG 1: ending poverty in all its forms everywhere.
  2. SDG 4: ensuring quality education for all and promoting lifelong learning.
  3. SDG 5: achieving gender equality and empowering all women and girls.
  4. SDG 10: reducing inequality.

Eventually we plan on modernising the farming methods and have irrigation in place and encouraging the community to farm commercially so they will be able to sell their produce on the local market in the capital or even trade with the neighbouring countries on the border. As it is today most of the food they eat are imported from neighbouring countries. With their fertile soil they should be able to farm enough not just for their community but also sell the surplus.

Electricity- our village lacks electricity and our plan is to install solar street light and a central post where we can have refrigerators etc to store their produce.

If you would like to help us make a difference then feel free to donate to this project.
